We'd love to see you...

According to the AAA, over a quarter of all Americans are projected to travel more than 50 miles from home during the Christmas and New Year's holiday - but fewer of them will be in Florida. What? Why ever not?
The annual holiday travel survey commissioned by the auto club showed 87.7 million Americans will be "going over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house", or by some other means to some other destination for the holidays. A year ago, the survey showed 84.5 million Americans planned to travel during the weeks of Christmas and New Year.
While travel is projected to increase nationwide, Florida and some other states are predicted to have fewer travelers.
Well, just to jog your memory, here are some of the reasons why anyone giving Florida the swerve this holiday season is just plain crazy.

1. Sunshine. It's not called the Sunshine State for nothing folks

2. Sea. Warm, calm, safe, full of fish. Just like the sea used to be.

3. Disney. Love it or hate it, you just have to see it.

4. Food. We're surrounded by the sea, we've got lots of fresh fish.

5. Cape Canaveral. It's just awesome.

6. Golf. Some of the best courses in the country, relaxed and easy. Just like your swing should be.

7. Wildlife. Manatees, dolphins, gators, birdlife, no too many spiders...

8. Diversity. From deserted beaches on the Panhandle, to cosmopolitan Miami, with tourist-friendly Orlando and paradise islands such as Anna Maria and vast skies of the keys.

9. Value for money. There's a very good reason why we're such a popular destination. And this is it.

10. Everything. Really, just everything about it is what makes Florida so special.

And if none of that is enough to tempt you here, then we're not sure we want you...

3000: The future of air travel?

This from the discount travel website www.travekdealsreview.net It's about discount flights folks, something in which we should all be interested. Link to it here

USA3000, the quasi-charter flight operation that sells directly to the public, offers a sale to warm destinations for travel during winter’s coldest days.

A sampling of the routes on sale (one-way fares, taxes and fees extra): St. Louis to Ft. Myers, Florida: $69.99 Chicago to Cancun, Mexico: $99.99 Cleveland to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: $99.99 Chicago to Montego Bay, Jamaica: $129.99 Detroit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: $139.99

Yes, these fares are being offered for departures in December, January, and beyond, but availability is limited. Finding the lowest “starting at” prices can be a challenge but not impossible. On the Chicago-Cancun route, for example, we were able to find several dates available at $99.99 each for departures in January.

If the cheapest price isn’t available, the next best price doesn’t cost all that much more. Again on the Chicago-Cancun scenario, there were plenty of dates offered at a rate of $129.99 each way, which is still pretty good. For more details, a list of sale routes, and bookings, check out USA3000’s website at www.usa3000.com

Travelers looking for a Brit of a change

It looks like the Brits have had enough of staycationing, and as their fall has begun with some truly awful weather, bookings to sunnier climes are taking off.

And Florida is right at the top of the list, according to travel company Travel Counsellors, who, according to UK newspaper, The Daily Mail, reported that there had been a surge in Christmas bookings to Orlando in Florida.

The company says there has been a 41 per cent increase in bookings for the Christmas period compared with this time last year. A more favourable exchange rate, combined with special offers on trips, particularly in Orlando and Las Vegas which have been hard-hit by the recession, could be combining to cause the boom.

Recession fatigue may also have an effect, with Britons fed up of missing out on their little luxuries, such as foreign trips. According to the Mail, many have started to look towards next summer and are making the most of earlybird deals. Travel Counsellors has reported a 10 per cent increase in bookings made in September for summer 2010.

Labor Day savings

The New York Times reports falling airfares for fall, especially to Florida beach resorts.
Average fares to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale are down 18 per cent to $222 and $208 respectively, according to Bing Travel, the new Microsoft search engine that uses the airfare tracking tools of Farecast. And a recent online search for flights from New York City, departing Thursday, Sept. 4, and returning the next Monday, turned up many round-trip fares for under $300, including Myrtle Beach, S.C., ($155) and Toronto ($287).
There’s another incentive to fly somewhere this Labor Day: impending capacity cuts could push fares up this fall. “Is Labor Day going to be the last hurrah?” asked Genevieve Shaw Brown, senior editor at Travelocity.com.
Let's hope not.

Do the Charleston!

More great news of airline special offers, and again it's examiner.com bringing us the good tidings.
It seems Charleston and Huntington area airports have made it much more economical to travel to certain destinations. Huntington Tri-State airport offers direct flights to popular destinations such as Tampa, FL, Orlando, FL, St. Petersburg, FL, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Myrtle Beach, SC for under $100 per person round trip including taxes and fees.
Visit Tri-State's website for the most up-to-date airfares. Of course this price does not include your baggage, but just take a carry-on and you’re set to go without paying a baggage fee! Charleston’s Yeager Airport now has direct flights to Orlando, FL for about $100 round trip per person including taxes and fees through Air Tran. Check out Yeager's website for more up-to-date airfares as these may fluctuate slightly.

Name your own price in Orlando

Another great piece of advice from the guys at examiner.com this time about how to stay in Orlando for as cheap as possible. We all like going to Orlando every now and then - well, the kids do at least - but sometimes you feel like you're being taken for a ride before you even get to the parks.

Elana Nichols explains how to beat the system. Click here for the full article

When it comes to traveling to Orlando, room and board can really make those travel plans expensive. As a Florida resident, I love to spend weekends in Orlando. “Whoa, that could get expensive!” you say. You’re right. How do I do it? I use my favorite price weapon. I use Priceline!
It is amazing how much money you can save using Priceline. For example, my husband and I stayed in the Peabody, one of the few five star hotels in Orlando, for a mere $80.00 after tax. This is astounding because the Peabody can average $170.00 per night.
With Priceline Name Your Own Price deals you don’t have to worry about getting stuck with a grimy hotel in a poor area. You name the area and the star level that you want. On Priceline, a three star is very nice (ex: Hilton).
I will walk you through the process in the following easy steps:
1. Go to Priceline then click on “Name Your Own Price.”
2. Put in the city and state (you can even put in a theme park or landmark).
3. Choose the star level you would like- A safe bet for Priceline Hotels in the Orlando area is going for a three-star or better. Two stars are nice as well, just fewer amenities. It is better to start at a high star level and go lower. You get more bids for the same area this way.
4. Choose the area of town you want to stay in-a map will display allowing you to see where the area is in relation to your theme parks and attractions.
5. Name your price - don’t be afraid to go low. We stay at the Hilton regularly for a fraction of the regular rate. If you put in a price that is too low, a message will display saying that you have little to no chance of getting that price. If you see that message, increase the price one dollar at a time until it disappears.
6. You’re all done! If you didn’t get the price you named, you can also select other surrounding areas or star levels to bid again. (Doing this, we often get three star hotels for $50.00)

Wow, great advice Elana! Next time we're off, I know where I am going first...

Flights coming down

It might not only be the staycationers who make it to Anna Maria Island this summer, according to a newspaper in London, England, there are some surprisingly low air fares to Florida at the moment.
The Independent newspaper declares a flight to America to be its 'Bargain of the week'
It says: 'Continental Airlines, the fifth-biggest carrier in the world, is having a lousy time; its latest financial results showed a dramatic fall in revenue, and sharp reductions in premium passengers. That is why it has started a short-term sale offering uncommonly low summer fares to the US, around one-third less than prevailed a year ago. Non-stop return flights between Heathrow and Newark (New York's second airport) on Continental are widely available in August for £426 return, falling to £283 in September.
Delta is offering some even better fares on some Heathrow-New York JFK fares – as low as £414 return.
Equally surprising are the low fares on offer to Florida. Peak days during the school summer holidays often hit £1,000 for non-stop flights on British Airways and Virgin from Gatwick to Orlando. This year, though, the absolute peak dates – 1 August outbound, 15 August inbound – are available on BA for around £800 return. If you change planes along the way (eg on Continental via Newark, Northwest via Detroit and US Airways via Philadelphia), the target range is between £600 and £650.

So perhaps we should prepare for a small invasion of Brits this summer. Of course they are most welcome to Anna Maria Island.

If you are coming to Anna Maria Island, and we really think you should be, why not stay in the very best rental accommodation the island has to offer. Visit www.annamaria.com to see where you could be staying.

Florida told to stand by

We are sure you're aware of the potential pandemic of swine flu which is sweeping across America at the moment. As reported widely, Florida has so far escaped any instances of the disease, but as the Tampa Tribune reports, that should be no reason for complacency.

While no cases of swine flu have been reported in Florida, county health departments around the state have a surveillance system in place to detect the new strain of influenza.
"We're monitoring this along with the federal government," said Steve Huard, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Health Department.
Health officials use a reporting system for cases of flu. If any cases of the strain are diagnosed, the results will be sent to Tallahassee and then to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The state health department will take direction from the CDC, Huard said.
As the number of confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States climbed to 20, federal officials declared a public health emergency today and warned the public to prepare for widespread outbreaks.
Tampa International Airport has not received any alerts from U.S. Customs and Border Protection or the CDC about procedures to screen arriving or departing passengers, said Brenda Geoghagan, the airport spokeswoman.
However, there are procedures that could be put in motion to screen passengers as well as protect airport workers.
The screening could involve questioning arriving or departing passengers about recent illnesses or their health.
Any screening of passengers arriving on international flights would fall to the Customs bureau. For domestic flights, screening would be done by airport and airline workers as passengers depart.
"There probably would be multiple layers," Geoghagan said.
The local health department routinely alerts the airport of outbreaks of contagious diseases.

Flights for (much) less

Hurry, there's still time to take advantage of this special offer from Southwest Airlines, as highlighted on the travel website www.jaunted.com

Not to be outdone by JetBlue with their one-day sale, Southwest Airlines started their own promotion. They’ll be offering fifty percent off their Wanna Get Away fares from a different destination each day. Initially, there were a few clues to help you identify the secret locations, but now that they’ve revealed the first one we just have to wait and see.
Tuesday’s special city was Philadelphia, and it looks like you can get some pretty decent deals —like $50 each way to select cities in Florida. The sale says it's for flights to Philly, but we found half-off fares leaving the city as well. You need to purchase today of course, and must travel May 1 through June 10. Unfortunately, Memorial Day weekend is their one blackout time period.
To book your flight head over to their website and make sure you enter the promotional code LUVPHL. Continue to check them out through Monday, and see what other deals they have to offer. Let’s just hope another low cost carrier jumps in with a new sale next week; we’re starting to like this cheapo fare war thing.

So click on over and see how much you could save.

British hit by tax rise

The British Budget, which was released on Wednesday, did not contain much in the way of good news for families hoping to travel by airplane.
According to The Times newspaper, taxes on air fares will more than double after the Government pressed ahead with plans to increase air passenger duty (APD).
It said: "Despite complaints from the beleaguered travel industry, the taxes on all flights will increase sharply for the second time in two years. The increases, which were mooted in the PreBudget Report last year, will penalise long-haul flights and premium tickets most heavily."The tax on a single economy flight to Australia will increase from £40 to £85 by the end of next year. This is a quadrupling of the rate since 2007, when the duty was only £20. A family of four going on holiday to Florida will pay £480 in taxes for return economy tickets from next year. This rises to £960 if they travel in premium economy, business or first class."Travel companies reacted angrily to the increases, which they claim will endanger jobs in the industry. Dermot Blastland, managing director of Thomson Holidays, Britain’s largest tour operator, said: “We find it outrageous that despite clear briefings explaining why this tax is unfair and unjust, the Government continues to carry on regardless.”
It's still great value if you travel to Anna Maria Island and stay in one of our luxury villas. Just visit www.annamaria.com for the best in affordable luxury vacation rentals.

Beginning in July, newcomer Pet Airways is slated to begin service to five major cities, with plans to expand service to other cities before the year is out – but for pets only.
The initial schedule will include flights between New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles. Alysa Binder, founder and executive vice president of Pet Airways, said, "For us, it's all about the safety and the comfort of the pets."
Binder and husband Dan Wiesel were inspired to begin the unusual service after shipping their Jack Russell Terrier, Zoe, from the San Francisco area to South Florida, and considering an alternative for pets traveling in cargo holds.
Operated by Suburban Airlines, the airline plans to use 19-seat Beech 1900s, but without the seats. The planes’ interiors will be climate-controlled and well-lit, a far cry from accommodations offered to pets transported in airliner cargo holds.
“Pawsengers” will be accompanied by a flight attendant to care for their needs enroute, according to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Pets will be welcomed at check-in counters, and owners can track the flights on the company website.
Although the company is currently advertising lower introductory fares, tickets are expected to run about $250 each way, varying on pet sizes and needs, Binder said.

United getting tough on big passengers

Bloomberg reports bad news for those of us who are too big to fit in one seat on an airplane.
About 34 percent of Americans are obese, double the rate from 30 years ago, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Only one state, Colorado, has an obesity rate of less than 20 percent. This might affect quite a few of us then...

Bloomberg, April 15 - United Airlines, the third-largest US carrier, may force some obese travelers to buy a second seat when flights are full and other passengers complain about being cramped.
The policy brings practices at UAL Corp’s United in line with those at the other five biggest US carriers including Delta Air Lines Inc. The rule took effect today after being adopted in January, said Robin Urbanski, a United spokeswoman.
United passengers previously “had to share their seat with the oversized guest” on full planes, Urbanski said. Chicago-based United acted after receiving “hundreds” of public complaints each year, she said.
“It’s going to perpetuate that negative stigma that’s already associated with obesity,” said James Zervios, a spokesman for the Obesity Action Coalition, a nonprofit advocacy group in Tampa, Florida. Airline seats already “could use a few extra inches of room on all sides,” he said.

Florida, anything but the Pitts

Here's a story from Pittsburgh news channel WTEA TV, encouraging residents to take off for some great deals - including heading down to Florida.

Now may be the right time for vacationers looking to escape the April showers of Pittsburgh in favor of sunnier pastures to cash in on travel deals.
Airfare to popular destinations like Florida, New York, Las Vegas and Boston has been dropping.
"From airfare to hotel to food to activities, it gets kind of pricey. If we could get something where everything is included, we'll be good to go," said Maria Dravecky, who is planning a vacation with her husband.
Ponzio travel agent Vicky Sammartino said airlines, cruise lines and hotels have been worried about a lack of business, prompting some of them to cut prices in half from last year.
"Book now. This is a great time," encouraged Sammartino.
Roundtrip flights to Boston and New York have been found for less than $100.
Sammartino recently booked a couple for a five-night stay at the Belaggio in Las Vegas for $550 per person, including airfare.
She also made arrangements for a family of four on a week-long Caribbean cruise for about $2,000.
Sammartino said the key to finding the best deals is being flexible with travel dates, which doesn’t always make things easier.
"It makes it harder because now there are a lot of deals and there are more places we have to choose from," said Dravecky.

The Jamaicans are coming

As of June 25, Air Jamaica will be operating one more flight between Jamaica and Fort Lauderdale, making a total of five daily.
The yet-to-be privatised airline said that this was in anticipation of the busy summer travel season.
“This additional daily flight on our Fort Lauderdale route is in response to passenger demand to and from the South Florida area. We have enjoyed a substantial increase in our load factor on this route since our new schedule was introduced at the end of February and aim to continue providing the best schedule for our passengers”, said Tom Hill, Air Jamaica Chief Revenue Officer.
Air Jamaica previously switched its Florida hub from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, which it said was a more convenient airport for Jamaicans and the Jamaica Diaspora.

State backing Delta in flight fight

Here's an interesting story from Tampa Bay Online. Read the full excerpt here

Taxpayers could wind up paying a $1.5 million revenue guarantee to Delta Air Lines to compete with Fort Lauderdale-based Gulfstream International Airlines by adding flights between Tallahassee and Tampa, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale beginning April 1.
The state has committed to a $750,000 share, with Leon County and the city of Tallahassee each picking up $375,000 shares, in the "stop-loss guarantee" deal in the event the
Delta flights do not generate enough revenue.
That means taxpayers, through the government partners, would pay Delta up to $1.5 million if Delta fell short of the $11.5 million it said it needed in passenger revenue to operate the flights for one year.
The new service is scheduled to begin six months after Delta pulled out of Tallahassee when
aviation fuel prices soared.
Delta will use 34-seat
turboprop aircraft by its Minnesota-based Mesaba Airlines subsidiary. Gulfstream uses 19-seat turboprops.
Airfares shown on travelocity .com for a round-trip flight between Tampa and Tallahassee on April 13 and returning April 17 were $351 with taxes for both airlines.
"The governor does support the stop-loss guarantee because it is important that citizens have access to their state capital and for Tallahassee," spokesperson Sterling Ivey said in an e-mail.
The $750,000, if needed, would come from the Office of Trade, Tourism and Economic Development, he said.
That has Gulfstream chief executive Dave Hackett livid.
"I was apoplectic when I heard of the deal, and that was from a customer of ours who called me around late January and said 'You will not believe what I've heard,'" said Hackett, whose airline flies as a
Continental Connection carrier for Continental Airlines.
Hackett said he called the governor's office when he learned of the deal but got nowhere. He said the deal would not have taken place without the state guarantee.
"We don't mind competition, we always have competition," Hackett said. "But we are the only one who has survived in these markets and for good reason: We are a fairly small airline based in Florida and we have the infrastructure to be successful."
The Delta connection flights by Mesaba will serve Tampa and Tallahassee with two round-trip flights on weekdays and one on Saturdays and Sundays.
The
Continental Connection flights by Gulfstream serve Tampa and Tallahassee with four weekday flights and two Sunday flights.

Snow way to begin

Hello and welcome to a brand new blog about finding you the best in travel bargains to get to Florida. We'll be checking all the latest news on airlines and finding you the best price for air travel to Florida - wherever you are leaving from.
But before we get started, here's an interesting story about the recent bad weather which even affected goings on in South Florida's airports.
In fact the whole nation's aviation system struggled to resume normal operations after a powerful winter storm stymied air traffic throughout the Northeast and bogged down many flights.
"Even if the weather clears, you have crews in one place and planes in another, and they all have to get back on schedule," said Greg Meyer, a spokesman for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Miami International Airport reported just two inbound delays, two outbound delays, one inbound cancellation and two outbound cancellations. As a result thousands of passengers were marooned in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach over the past two days.
The cause of all this was a fierce winter storm which caused 12 inches of snow to fall in the New York area. Airlines canceled more than 900 flights to and from the Northeast, disrupting passengers nationwide.
But this is rare, and normal business will be resumed soon. So keep checking back for all the best offers on travel and flights to Florida.

And, once you get here, come and stay in Anna Maria Island with us. Check out all Anna Maria Vacations has to offer - we think you'll find us better than all the rest...
